OT – Karmic Update and Award; Goodbye Without Leaving

Update on stuff I gave away.

Goodbye Without Leaving

Donated a bag of books to the library. This one, “Goodbye Without Leaving” by Laurie Colwin was arguably the toughest to let go of.  I kinda hope someone — first I thought a young gal, but then why be restrictive — reads it and is as taken with the romance, comedy and joie de vivre as I was. Actually it’s not my favourite book of hers, I forget the title of the one that is. But it’s one where the main character is a (white) grad student and wants to be (or ends up being?) a backup singer for an all black girl band. The Sugarettes perhaps. I’m not going to google.

Bag for Sally Ann

The start of another pile of clothes for the Sally Ann.

I’m delighted to say that Ms. Urbanista was the lucky recipient of the yellow boots, for having the best story about rainboots. She had the exact same pair in pink, and lost one, but kept the other in case she found it again. I am holding her to taking a photograph of her wearing one yellow and one pink rainboot.

Bag for Sally Ann 2

And last, but certainly not least, a big (and belated) thank you to Drew Kail, a fabulous printmaker in Oregon, for the Illuminating Blogger Award. I really like the word illuminate.

There are rules. Today I feel obedient.

1).  Leave a comment on the original award site.

Done.

2). You have to choose 5 other bloggers to nominate:

For  the usual suspects (Richard and John) who got me started on the Untitled nonsense:

The Future is Papier Mache – street photography and riffs on album/song titles

Notes to the Milkman – “random ramblings about art”

Ben whose jokes also inspired the Untitled jokes (although I haven’t done that in a while – my sense of humour must have melted) : Year of Living Sober

Art Inspiration — Ann for her thoughtful and delightful blog: Image/Object/Text

Diary, Humour and Oddities: Frivolous Monsters

I am breaking the rules and adding two more:

Cardinal Guzman – lovely photographs and quirky posts

The Sweaty Knitter, Weaver and Devotee of Other Fiber Arts – knitting, fashion, nostalgia, vintage advertising. All around swellagant.

3). And share a Random Fact About Yourself:

My feet are really wide, making it very difficult to wear girly shoes. I once did a Flash animation about it, and a woman emailed me to ask where I bought my shoes, as her daughter had really wide feet too. I was touched, but unable to help her.  In case the word Flash didn’t tip you off, it was in the dark ages of the internet (early 2000s I believe).

Nominated bloggers, if you don’t follow rules and do nothing, that’s aok!

Day 162 – Miller’s Book of Antiques 2007 Ed

Miller's Book of Antiques

Bought this at a local bookstore that was closing. Probably two or three years ago. What’s sad is I can’t remember the name of the store.

I have gleaned many things from this book, but I have not found that any of my vintage/antique treasures are truly treasures. But, hey it’s only the 2007 edition.

Reference books must surely fall solidly into the obsolete category. Yet I do enjoy randomly opening a page and landing upon something obscure and precious.

Status: Take a few more stabs at photographing the tops of the pages. Then donate to library. Hopefully they take these types of books.

Alt Title: Untitled Book No. 162 Honoring the Old and Forgotten.

Do not forget old friends
you knew long before I met you
the times I know nothing about
being someone
who lives by himself
and only visits you on a raid.

From “Selected Poems”. Leonard Cohen.

I will not say he is old. I saw him perform 2 years ago and he kept the music going for quite a while. Unlike Madeleine Peyroux, who disdainfully decided to close up early. She is at least 35 years his junior. He puts her to shame. End rant. I still like her songs and voice. Especially her rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Dance Me to the End of Love and of his Blue Alert.

Untitled Series of Alt titles, jokes and whatnots variously inspired by Richard, John and Ben.

Day 161 – Bit of Stained Glass

Stained Glass

Bit of Stained Glass. One pane missing.

It hung vertically, so the flower was never really facing up. The lead from the missing glass is super malleable. I knew it had this property, but not that it was so soft.

Stained Glass

That bit of purple is where it really shines.

Status: Now that’s it has been moved from the home to the studio, it might find a spot to be admired, despite its missing parts.

Kill-ratio: 18:3 or 6:1 Lazy Friday. First shots will do.

Alt-title: Untitled Anthem No. 161 for Stained Glass

I’m borrowing from myself. I already used Anthem for a Leonard Cohen Alt Title this week. But hey, this glass lets a lot of light in.

You can add up the parts
but you won’t have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

Anthem, Leonard Cohen.

Part of the Untitled Series of Alt titles, jokes and whatnots variously inspired by Richard, John and Ben. Happy Friday.

Day 160 – Fool’s Gold

Fools Gold

Pyrite – Fool’s Gold. “The mineral pyrite, or iron pyrite, is an iron sulfide with the formula FeS2.”

Wikipedia goes on to say the hopeful “Despite being nicknamed fool’s gold, pyrite is sometimes found in association with small quantities of gold.”

Another more esoteric source claims pyrite is good for creativity and memory. I could use a bit of both, so have a new found appreciation for this rock.

Alt Title: Ode to An Untitled Fool No. 160

I did my best, it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch
I’ve told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you
And even though
It all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

– Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen – bit of an optimist and a playful fool himself me thinks.

Day 159 – Postcard of Canadian Mountie

Postcard Mountie

Postcard of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Cleaning out some photographs (the 4×6″ kind I used to get doubles of with my LD key) and, gasp, actually throwing heaps away, I came across some more old postcards. This unused one included. Although there is a tape mark on the back, so it was used by someone for something once upon a time.

Postcard Mountie Back

Status: Just newly found, it will find space amongst the ephemera. As an aside, a very old black and white  photograph I have of Mt. Gass has gone missing. I am amazed how much I miss it.

Alt Title: The Lonely Untitled RCMP Officer No. 159

Queen Victoria,
the Twentieth Century belongs to you and me
Let us be two severe giants not less lonely for our partnership,
who discolour test tubes in the halls of Science,
who turn up unwelcome at every World’s Fair,
heavy with proverbs and corrections,
confusing the star-dazed tourists
with our incomparable sense of loss

Poem, Queen Victoria, Leonard Cohen.
There’s no RCMP officer mentioned in the poem, but I do think of the 20th Century and RCMPs and the Queen somehow all in the same frame.
It’s Leonard Cohen Alt Title week here at project Obso, inspired by Richard and John. There were once jokes, inspired by Ben. They may return. All my Untitled Nonsense posts can be found by searching for Untitled. They’re not all tagged yet.
