OT – One Year Blogiversary // & 12 Days…

Mamiya

Today is my blog’s one year anniversary! Happy Anniversary Obsolescence Project!

Mamiya

Mamiya featured in Day 22

If you read this blog regularly, you will know I am slightly disappointed with myself for not reaching 365 Object Posts (ie: on topic posts about obsolescing things with photographs)  in 365 days, but that due to various things – a freaky ocular migraine, being run down, and a headache that won’t go away, plus some good news (!),  I had to quell my inner tally tyrant and let that goal go.

I will oblige it and eventually do a thorough accounting of posts – as I made some errors – ie: certain Days got the same # due to sloppiness. But WordPress does show that I’ve published 359 posts in 365 days, so in all I’m only short by a few posts. In terms of OP Object Posts, I’m short by ~13 (to be verified).

I started this blog with the goal of 30 posts in 30 days. That blew by in no time. And I then decided to go on until I ran out of objects. With the exception of the purchase of some 8-track cassette tapes and one photographic flash gun,  I did not purchase any “new” things for the blog (promised Mr OP) and I still haven’t run out of things! So the posting goal was switched to 365.

I will get there, just not today.

On another note… one of the reasons I missed out on 4, that’s FOUR, consecutive days of posting…..

I got married to Mr. OP in Vegas 12 days ago!

We eloped essentially, although we had 5 days of pre-planning.  I plan to also do another OT post about getting married in Vegas, but I’ve promised myself to keep off the box as much as possible until this eye/headache thing goes away, so I’m keeping it short.

We found a sweet little chapel and had 2 friends as witnesses, who didn’t know we were getting married. We arrived on Saturday night at 11pm and surprised them with the news.

We drove out (in a limo!) to Red Rock Valley after the ceremony. Stunning.

Mr. OP and I have lived together for over 10 years, so it’s not like it’s that new, and yet in fact, it’s very special, and different to be married.

Cheers!

p.s. I have really super curly hair, but straightened it for the occasion. It being the desert, the effect lasted longer than the usual 20 minutes! (I live in the “rainforest” aka Vancouver – so make that 10 minutes).

Day 351 – Wine Brolly

Umbrella

Umbrella

Compact umbrella housed inside a plastic case disguised as a wine bottle. Its small scale is more like a vinegar bottle, but I think of it as the wine brolly.  The advertisement is for a winery. This is the first time I’ve taken it out of its case, although I didn’t open it all the way  – bad luck and what not opening umbrellas inside:)! It was acquired six months ago, as a promotional gift that came with some wine I bought. In fact, the details of its acquisition are slightly more salacious than that.

I was in a small town, or a village, when back East this summer. I’m not sure how to define the difference between a really small town and a village. All my knowledge of villages are based upon Agatha Christie novels, or watching Midsomer Murders. At any rate, it was more like John Prine’s “In a town this size” type of town. The store sells groceries, clothes, pharmacy stuff and booze. Only certain parts of Canada have that privilege (the selling alcohol in a grocery store thing).  I was with one of my cousins, and he was a 2nd or 3rd cousin to the cashier. He got a free prize with his beer, because he had bought a 12-pack case, and I had only bought a 6-pack as well as a bottle of wine. (It was a family reunion, big party). This made me jealous, I whimpered, and the cashier’s husband (possibly a 3rd cousin once removed) took pity, and pulled out this umbrella. I was pleased as punch. But still I never used it.

I now may actually have to take the plunge and open it all the way, as I misplaced my bright and cheerful yellow brolly. I hope it will turn up. Otherwise, this compact one will have to be put to the test.

Umbrella

I see one reference that cites the umbrella as having been invented over 4,000 years ago. That’s a long time to get it right, and yet they seem to inevitably fall apart sooner rather than later.

In case this is blocked – it’s John Prine and Dolores Keane: In a Town This Size

p.s. This came so close to falling into the “still sealed” category suggested by John for the bow tie and DVD, but alas, I had to break it open to demonstrate its brolliness.

Day 350 – Cable Drawing – Firewire

Cable Drawing

Old firewire cable for the Sony camcorder. Unlike the other firewire cables I have that fit many cameras, this one is too big for my Nikon. Until I capture those tapes* however, it is still needed, even if obsolete.

(* Those tapes are digital hi-8 tapes which contain a myriad of old artwork, mundane life moments and a fire next door – thus the need to keep until they are captured).

Status: Deadline is now February 28, 2013 for capturing those tapes. There I’ve set a deadline. Make it happen Number 1!

————————–

My status: Eyes still a bit of a bother – sensitive to light, which means the box, so I’m cutting down my online time (a tad difficult as I work on the box all day) so my goal to finish 365 days object/photograph posts in 365 days may not happen. This combined with being run down and Feb 1 only 3 posting days away means that “may not” is more like “probably won’t” but who knows. Life does has that pesky habit of getting in the way of the best laid plans. At any rate, I am only 15 posts away from 365 days of obsolete objects! Yahoo. Although I do have to double check my numbers, as there were some posts that got the same number due to sloppiness, so maybe I’m even closer?

I hope to do an OT life (good news) update soon and an OT tally tyrant (posts counting, future plans, and what not about blogging) soon and get back to commenting etc on other blogs.

p.s. A little shout out to Ann, who first commented on one of my cable drawings and encouraged more.

Day 349 – 45 The Ramrods

45 ramrods

45 by The Ramrods. (Ghost) Riders in the Sky – Side A. Zig Zag, Side B. It was released in New York by Bell Records in 1960, I’m not sure when this “Quality Records Ltd” record was was pressed. Probably 1961.
I learned from a Rockabilly site the Ramrods were an instrumental rock n’ roll group, whose uniqueness was that they had a lead female drummer – Claire Lane.

The sleeve that’s holding this 45 is from “A & A Records” – a onetime big record store in Canada, which went bankrupt in 1991.

45 ramrods

The  condition of this vinyl is not pristine. But I don’t think there are major scratches. With the pile of 45s and LPs I’m going through here on this project, I should probably learn more about the grading system for evaluating condition. Is it a G or VG or somewhere in-between? Maybe it’s only a meh – so so.

This song was a remake of the 1949 hit version by Vaughn Monroe. It reached spot #30 in the US and #8 in the UK. No stats for us lonely Canucks.

p.s. In case anyone notices:) – I’m still in catch up mode and not getting around to reading my favourite blogs. Also my eyes need the rest apparently. Hope to catch up with y’all soon.

Day 348 – Roman Trulla Replica

Roman creamer

Vintage Reproduction of a Roman Trulla. Made by Gorham For Horizon. Silverplated. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. ~1960s.

“This ‘trulla’ (ladle or pitcher) is copied from a highly unusual piece of Roman silver from the republican period. The original, now owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, has no parallels in other Roman art objects and utensils; nor has it any known antecedents in Greek vase shapes.

It was part of a set of ancient silver said to have been ‘found’ near Tivoli by persons unknown, toward the end of the 19th century. ”  The Association of Small Collectors of Antique Silver

I enjoy the twist that this is both vintage and a reproduction of something very old.
