Day 332 – DVD Player

DVD Player

Toshiba DVD Player. Digital Cinema Progressive. Manufactured October 2007.  DivX ready!

This is the player I referred to yesterday that slowly stopped working, where I was attributing the malfunction to the DVDs, not to where it properly belonged – the machine itself.

Are DVD players obsolete? I see a Toshiba model for $35 at one of those big box stores. And less than $20 for some “no-name” brands.  So they are still available. Yet, it seems highly unlikely we will replace this, even though the price point has dropped. For now the computers will play my yoga dvds, and the few odds and ends we own. (Futurama leaps to mind as something I won’t get rid of quite yet).

Day 331 – Remote Control for Dead DVD Player

Remote control for DVD Player

Remote control for DVD Player which died a couple of months ago. I just dismantled the player from the TV today.

I didn’t notice the dvd player was broken for a while, our local dvd store having gone bankrupt some time ago.  I use it almost exclusively for watching my yoga dvds (not quite the same as going to a class, but hey it’s a decent substitute), and when one of them stopped playing I just assumed it was scratched or something and moved onto another. Which did work. I don’t watch yoga dvds every week, just now and then, so I didn’t think too much about the status of the player.

Then I signed up for  a “free” dvd (a sort of business feel good promo thing that came in the old fashioned post) and it didn’t work. I was all bummed out, thinking jeez, what a waste (of packaging, time ) etc. So then I thought to try it in my computer and it did work. Then I realized it was the dvd player, not the dvd. And sure enough, my favourite old yoga dvd (one of the Rodney Lee ones) still worked on the computer. By this time about 45 minutes had passed, so all I did was confirm it worked, but didn’t actually get around to watching the content.

It’s been almost three months since this revelation, and oddly I have still not watched  that free business dvd. I think I still associate it with the frustration of several attempts at playing it and it not working.

This remote control still works, or at least it turns on the player, but that’s all.

Day 330 – RCA Red Seal 45 – Boston Pops Orchestra

45 Jalousie Decca Record

RCA Victor Red Seal Record 49-0526-A. “Jalousie” Performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra on Side A I assume, and Ritual Fire on Side B. Jalousie was composed by Jacob Gade, a Danish violinist and composer. The song was written to accompany a silent film.

It is a tango. Jalousie is a great title for a tango. I should take tango lessons.

45 Jalousie Decca Record

This is the 2nd Red Seal record featured on #projectObso. Day 301 featured the song M’appari from Opera Martha, which appeared  in Epsiode 11 of Ulysses.

Status: Easy: Look into Tango Lessons.
Challenging: Research original silent film and make a 4 minute video to accompany recording.

Day 329 – Vintage Postcard

Postcard

Unsent Postcard “Seine Fishing Tobago WI”. No postage required if sent digitally.

This is what I should do with all my postcards – send them out for Valentine’s.

I suspect a relative gave this to me, but it could be from anywhere really, given the various tidbits of paper that have found their way into my hands.

I love the colour of the man on the far right’s t-shirt.

Day 328 – Earrings

earrings

Two sets of earrings. One green. One blue. These aren’t the cute vintagey kind like from the screw-ons from Day 224, or the clip-ons from Day 119. Nope, these fall into the “obsolete version of myself” category. I used to wear them a lot. And now they’ve sat neglected for, oh, seven years at least?

They also fall into the mixed emotions category, which clutters up their ability to be swept out the door quickly.
