Day 224 – Screw on Earrings

Screw on Earrings

Screw on Earrings.

I learned from Georgian Jewelry that “Screw-back earrings invented in the very late 19th century, were now used almost exclusively as pierced ears were considered taboo.” They state their popularity as being the Art Deco period. I’m also now conscious I don’t know how to spell jewellery. There are variations, the usual American vs British and there is also a Canadian take.

I am tagging both jewelry and jewellery. I think I prefer the latter.

I believe these were another flea market find by my mother, the queen of garage sales. I find screwing them on satisfying but challenging.

Haven’t worn them in at least 7 years. They are dusted off for Obsoness.

Days 119 and 131 also featured vintage earrings, but clip-ons, not screw-ons.

Status: Despite their obvious wear and tear they still have a little satisfying bling. Need to find a cocktail dress to match and go out one evening sporting them.

Alt-title: Untitled Object No. 224 For Screwing in Your Wandering Thoughts.

Untitled / Alt-Titles:

Day 119 also had an actual attempt at an Untitled Joke, as opposed to a passing soupcon of humour presented these last few weeks.

I will soon do a post about this Alt-Title stuff. Until then, the usual nod of appreciation to  Richard, and  John, for inspiring the Alt-Title Untitled post delirium, and to Ben for the jokes format. I hope there’s someone out there who knows html and appreciates the extra element of the “joke” (no pun intended)

Day 223 – DSL Microfilter

Telephone adapter

DSL Microfilter. I already posted about the spares for this on Day 78, the first day of adding the tag sea monster, but long before the Alt Titles/Untitled flights of fancy came into being.

Fast-forward to a couple of weeks ago, the internet and phone (yes a landline!) at the studio/office went down. After an extremely unreasonable wait time from Telus repair – with a business account no less-  they came and repaired it. That went smoothly enough. They’re only a telecommunications company – why is getting in touch with them so hard? Aah — but there were outages elsewhere that day.

Anyhow back to the cable thing-a-ma-bob. The Telus repair man was very friendly and once he negotiated the scary room in the basement in this heritage building, it was all back up and running.

Before he left, he told me he had replaced this adapter. He picked it up and deftly tossed it into the garbage, pronouncing it obsolete. Little did he know how much glee that word would bring to me. As soon as he left I quickly scooped it out of the garbage. It deserves an honourable goodbye here.

Rescued from the garbage

Luckily the garbage was fairly clean.

I feel like  I should do a post about this Alt-Title stuff. Until then, the usual nod of appreciation to  Richard, and  John, for inspiring the Alt-Title Untitled post nonsense, and to Ben for the jokes format. I hope there’s someone out there who knows html and appreciates the extra element of the “joke” (no pun intended)

Day 222 – Book: The Art of Colour

Book - The Art of Colour

The Art of Colour. Michel Jacobs. This is a 3rd edition I believe. I forgot to write the details down.

It is a lovely used book. Full of science and romance. It has most certainly achieved obsolescence status ages ago. There it was to find on the bookshelf, Mr. OP no doubt got this at a garage sale and it slipped my notice until now. There is always something to look forward to in the never ending decluttering quest.

As per usual, a shout-out thanks to Richard, and to John, for inspiring the Alt-Title Untitled post nonsense, and to Ben for the jokes format. I hope there’s someone out there who knows html and appreciates the extra element of the “joke” (no pun intended)

Day 221 – Map Book of Canada

Book of maps of Canada

Book of Maps of Canada. Not that old as you can see by the bar code. But not that new either. From the last century.

They say because of gps built into our phones and all that, you can’t get lost anymore. I find that a bit troubling.

I know someone who is planning on driving across Canada. She is an American traveling with her boyfriend. He is European.  She showed me a map (google ) of her planned route. I was encouraging her to pass through the wine country in the Okanagan valley before making it out here to the outer edges of the West Coast. They are not going to do that. They will go North. I suppose they should see the North. I’ve been North once, it was magnificent. But I think what neither of them realize, especially the European chap, is that Canada is filled with empty wilderness. Not little villages with cafes in them, but emptiness. Miles and miles of emptiness. Not counting the trees and the animals of course.  I know their trip will be spectacular. But I do hope they don’t get lonely.

Book of maps of Canada

Status: Can I convince Mr. OP we no longer need this? Or is a book of paper maps something that needs to be kept, just in case the cellular network goes down and you find yourself on the open road.

Day 220 – Spirits Dispenser

Spirits Dispenser Detail 1

Spirits Dispenser.

Not sure precisely which type of spirits would go in here. This is possibly art deco. The metal has that type of flourish.

Spirits Dispenser Detail 1

Mr. OP got it as a gift from an elderly lady who was also an artist. We haven’t had the occasion to pour anything from its lips. It is stunning, but does belong to another era of entertaining.

Head over to Ben’s blog for thoughts on spirits as he lives a year without booze.  Also the usual thanks to Richard, and to John, for inspiring the Alt-Title Untitled post obsession. I know there’s someone out there who knows html and appreciates the extra element of the “joke” (no pun intended).
