Day 304 – Polka Dot Bow Tie

Bowtie

Vintage clip on silk bow tie.

Apparently considered,in some circles, to be rather déclassé —”the cookie-cutter precision of a pre-tied model diminishes it to an assembly-line commodity (Black Tie Guide)” — as opposed to the self-tied bow which  has a ‘quirkiness’ that gives it that wee dot of  je ne sais quoi.

These days, I would say even with the pre-tied nature of this beauty, it’s still pretty quirky and has a lot of flair. I love the dots. Plus it’s silk, which is always classy, eh?

Day 303 – Postcard Sinclair Canyon

Vintage postcard the Kootenays

Postcard of Sinclair Canyon, Kootenay Mountain Park. Made in Canada by the Gowen, Sutton Co. Ltd, Vancouver, BC

The Sinclair Canyon is the entrance way to Kootenay Mountain Park, and about 1.5km away are natural hot springs.

Not sure what the technical term is here for the type of colorization that is here. Is the original photograph black and white and then hand-coloured?

Vintage postcard the Kootenays

Lots of foxing. Although it’s priced at $2, I didn’t pay that. It was part of a bunch of ephemera at the flea market, Day 63’s the Captain amongst them.

Day 302 – 45 – Harry Belafonte Calypso

Harry Belaftone 45

Harry Belafonte Record —Calypso. A “New Orthophonic” 45 EP.” High Fidelity.
The album, ((LPM-1248) was the third studio album released by RCA Victor in 1956. I’m assuming the 45 is the same year. It has the same cover. I adore the green shirt against the red.

Side 1 has the uber well known  song Day-O, which, incidentally, I used in a piece once.
It is not actually a calypso song, but a traditional Jamaican folk song. Calypso is from Trinidad (where I have roots). Perhaps its original meaning has long been forgotten. The refrain refers to workers toiling late into the night, until the tallyman / overseer has given them permission to leave after tallying the bananas. I wonder if anyone’s ever written their thesis on this song?

Harry Belafonte – a gorgeous looking man. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy era.

p.s. This was supposed to publish last night. My numbering will be off.

Day 301 – RCA Victor 45 – M’Appari

45

RCA Victor Red Seal Record – Collector’s Issue. 45 RPM.

The record is the opera Martha: Act II by Flotow. M’APPARI (Like a Dream) — Enrico Caruso, Tenor. This 45 was made in Canada, can’t see any date. The vinyl itself is very thick, has a density that nicely contrasts its beautiful translucent red colour.

James Joyce used the song M’appari in the 11th episode of Ulysses. Which is on my to read list. This tidbit I found at sonic labryinth.

“Bloom is writing a letter to someone named Martha as this song commences and he notes the coincidence. He then wanders into a lovely riff:

“Numbers it is. All music when you come to think. Two multiplied by two divided by half is twice one. Vibrations: chords those are. One plus two plus six is seven. Do anything you like with figures juggling. Always find out this equal to that. “
The quote mentioned  appears on page 277 of our paperback, but on page 291 of “A Penn State Electronic Classics Series Publication”.  I think it’s a few pages back that the opera is mentioned, but I don’t want to spoil the book by starting my reading in the middle. Although given the skimming I just did, it might be apropos who knows.

Day 300 – Vintage Aerial Postcard – Environs de Frangy

Back of Postcard

Postcard. Editions Aérienes Combier Imp. Macon “CIM”

A french blog “Cartes postales de Mons-en-Barœul” has four postcards by this same printer, which are dated 1961, so I’m guessing this is of the same vintage.

It was either procured at a garage sale or the same flea market I picked up heaps of various ephemera .

It’s been raining a lot with low lighting conditions. Hence another window shot. I think I’ll keep this up for the remaining few postcards / old photographs I have. I like the romance.

I’ve never been to Frangy, but I think I’ve been very close, to Annency. It was 10 years ago. What’s not to like about France? Except that I had given up dairy at that point, and traveling to France reinstated my life long love affair with cheese. No regrets.

Postcard of Frangy

Status: Originally when I plucked these postcards from their dark and dusty storage (ie: the back of the closet) my thought was to ‘de-clutterize’ them by framing and hanging, thus appreciating  them all at a glance. I wonder if I shouldn’t send this to someone in Frangy for fun.
