The Artist’s Handbook of Materials and Techniques. 3rd Edition. Ralph Mayer.
A garage sale beauty that I’m afraid although it is Revised and Expanded, has not really been Opened. From a goodreads review, I can see that it mainly covers “Oil Painting, Pigments, Solvents and Gums, Basic Chemistry, Artwork Conservation Issues, Studio devices and tools” and leaves off installation and sculpture. “New” media, video art et al are probably also not covered.
It might be fun to muck around with the Basic Chemistry section and check out what can happen.
Status: Also read.
Kill-ratio: 16:2 / 8:1
Alt-title: Untitled Object No. 326 For Solving Aesthetic Puzzles.
Happy New Year / Bonne Année!
I have the fifth edition – and yes, mostly useful for painters … although there’s a decent bibliography, and some good stuff on conservation techniques.
